Wednesday the 12th of October 2016 is a National Public Holiday throughout the whole of Spain every year. If the day falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, public services sometimes move their day off or part time hours to the Monday or Friday. If the day lands on a weekend, they have the choice to take off the Friday or Monday. Hispanic Day celebrates the day Christopher Columbus first set foot in the Americas back in 1492. The history books state that Christopher Columbus set sail from the port of Palos de la Frontera in South-West Spain on August 3, 1492. He landed on a island that is now part of the Bahamas in the Caribbean on October 12, 1492. Here's a fun fact for you not many people know about... What did Christopher Columbus say to his men before they got on the ship? 'Men, get on the ship.' It's interesting to know what other countries refer to Hispanic Day as... October 12 is known as Discovery Day in the Bahamas; Day of the Cultures in Costa Rica; Day of the Race in Argentina, Chile and Mexico; Day of Indigenous Resistance in Venezuela. Columbus Day is held on the second Monday of October every year in the United States.
