Staying Connected in Tenerife

Tenerife has never been short of British visitors, and for decades the phone question sorted itself out: EU roaming meant your UK plan simply worked. Since Brexit, that safety net has gone patchy. Some networks kept roaming included, others quietly reintroduced daily charges, and plenty of holidaymakers only discover which camp they are in when the bill lands.

That is why a growing number of visitors now arrive with an eSIM already installed on their phone. It takes five minutes to set up before you leave home, costs a fraction of a roaming pass, and works from the moment you step off the plane at Tenerife South.

Check your UK plan before you assume anything

Start here, because it saves everything else. Some UK networks still include Spain in their inclusive roaming allowance; others charge a daily fee of around £2 to £8, and a few apply per-megabyte rates that get expensive fast. A two-minute look at your plan details tells you which applies to you.
If roaming is genuinely included and your data allowance is generous, you may not need anything else. If it is not, an eSIM is the cheapest fix by a wide margin.

What an eSIM actually is

An eSIM is a SIM card without the plastic. Instead of slotting a chip into your phone, you download a digital profile by scanning a QR code, and your phone treats it exactly like a physical SIM. Almost every handset released in the last five or six years supports it: iPhone XS onwards, Samsung Galaxy S20 onwards, Google Pixel 3 onwards.

The clever part for travellers is that your UK SIM stays exactly where it is. Your normal number keeps receiving calls, texts and those banking verification codes, while the eSIM quietly handles all your data at local rates. Two lines, one phone, no swapping and no tiny plastic card to lose on the plane.

What it costs for a week in Tenerife

Prices vary by provider and data allowance, but the shape of it is consistent. A plan with 5 GB covering a week or two typically runs somewhere between £7 and £15 in total, not per day. Compare that with a daily roaming pass at £6 to £8 and the maths does itself before you have finished your first coffee in Los Cristianos.

For most holidays, 5 GB is plenty: maps, WhatsApp, restaurant hunting, a bit of scrolling by the pool. If you are working remotely or streaming, look at 10 GB or an unlimited plan. Setting it up before you fly

The whole process takes about five minutes and is best done at home on wifi.

1. Confirm your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. Settings, Mobile Data, then look for "Add eSIM" or "Add data plan".
2. Buy a plan for Spain online. You will get a QR code by email within minutes.
3. Scan the code from your phone's settings. The profile downloads and sits dormant until you arrive.
4. On landing, turn off aeroplane mode, set the eSIM as your data line and switch on data roaming for that line only. Turn mobile data off for your UK SIM so nothing sneaks onto the wrong network.

That last step is the one people forget, and it is the difference between a clean bill and an unpleasant surprise.

Coverage on the island

Tenerife is well served across the resorts, Santa Cruz, La Laguna and the main roads. Where signal gets thin is exactly where you would expect: the Anaga forest tracks, parts of Teide National Park and some of the barrancos on the north coast. No provider fully solves that, so download offline maps of the island before you set off on a hiking day. Everywhere else, the connection is fast enough for video calls home.

A few practical notes

• Buy before you travel. You need internet to download the profile, and airport wifi is not something to rely on after a four-hour flight.
• Save the QR code. A screenshot means you can reinstall the profile without digging through email on a weak connection.
• Check the validity start. Good providers only start the clock when you first connect in Spain, so installing early costs you nothing.
• Share the connection. Hotspot works on most plans, handy for the family's tablets on a long transfer or a rainy afternoon in the apartment.

eSIM, local SIM card or roaming: which makes sense in Spain

Roaming with your UK provider. Zero effort, and genuinely fine if your plan includes Spain with a decent data allowance. Check the fair use cap: some plans include roaming but limit you to a few gigabytes before charges kick in.

A local SIM card. Spanish prepaid SIM cards from Movistar, Vodafone or Orange are cheap, but you need to visit a shop with your passport, and you lose your UK number while the physical SIM is out of your phone. For a one-week holiday, the queue alone is hard to justify.

A travel eSIM. The middle ground that has taken over: local network speeds, no shop visit, your UK number still live, and prices set before you fly. For most visitors to Tenerife it is now the default choice, which is why so many phones landing at Reina Sofía already have the profile installed.

Worth the five minutes

Nobody plans a holiday around mobile data, and that is rather the point: an eSIM removes the question entirely. You land, your phone connects, maps open, the villa's directions load, and you get on with the trip. For the price of two coffees at the airport, it is the least glamorous and most reliably useful thing you can pack.
