Description

GUIDED TOURS OF THE CUEVA DE LAS PALOMAS VOLCANIC TUBE. (1949) At the foot of the western slope of Cumbre Vieja lies the 'Cueva de Las Palomas,' a volcanic tube formed by the 1949 eruption (San Juan Volcano), which has been open to visitors by appointment since 2016. Along a walkway built over the volcanic flow as an access path to the main entrance, we can observe the different shapes, now solidified, that the lava took on its journey. This explanation is necessary to better understand the genesis of the volcanic tube, as the surface of the volcanic flow and its subsoil are closely related. After walking about 430 m along the walkway with several educational stops to talk about lava, volcanism, and caving in general, we will enter the volcanic tube that lies within the lava flow we have been walking on. Given that the cave is mostly in its natural state, there are no artificial lights or consolidated paths inside, so each visitor is equipped with a caving helmet with autonomous lighting. We will walk about 280 m down the hillside cave, making the relevant stops inside to explain the key points of its formation and answer visitors' questions and curiosities. Once the educational part is over, we will retrace our steps back to the starting point, answering any questions that may remain about the visit.

Includes
