Description
Begin your journey in Icod de los Vinos, where you’ll visit the Millennial Dragon Tree (Drago Milenario). Be astonished by the largest and longest-living specimen of its kind. Learn the legend of the 'Dragon's Blood' and why this sap was so highly valued since the time of the Guanches (Canary Island aboriginals).
Visit the butterfly garden El Drago and walk among more than 800 exotic butterflies from around the world. Observe how they are born, how they reproduce, and enjoy learning many things about these wonderful insects.
Explore the town of Icod, the San Marcos church, and La Pila square with its streets and houses that take you back to colonial times.
Next, head to Garachico, a village that was buried by lava in 1706 and miraculously rose from its ashes. Today, Garachico is a historical treasure and a symbol of resilience, awarded the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts.
Visit the stunning natural pools formed by solidified lava, where the sea washes over the black rock. Take a refreshing dip in the pools. See the Puerta de Tierra (Land Gate), the only remaining vestige of what was once the island's most important port before the catastrophe.
Finally, visit a genuine Guachinche, the best-kept secret of local gastronomy (exclusive to the North). Enjoy a traditional lunch with local harvest wine (vino del país), accompanied by Canarian star dishes: wrinkled potatoes (papas arrugadas) with mojo sauce, escaldón de gofio, and the specialty of the day. Discover the curious origin story behind the name of these traditional local taverns.
